Legionary Book Layout and Design
Book Layout and Design for Legionary: The Roman Soldier’s (Unofficial) Manual by Philip Matyszak I created a BLAD for the book Legionary: The Roman Soldier’s Unofficial Manual by Philip Matyszak. My goal was to make the themes of classical history more approachable to modern audiences, as these themes are popular currently, but easy-to-read content is still hard to find. I created a cover, prelim pages, all chapter titles, the first chapter, glossary, acknowledgements, further reading and inside cover pages/end pages. I used simple black and white images with purple and white used for the typography and backgrounds. I chose purple as this colour was a symbol of wealth and regality in Ancient Rome. I chose to use three fonts, in different weights, one for the titles, one for the body copy and captions, and another for quotes and subheadings. I used mosaic detailing for the titles and the folios, and used Roman numeral page numbers, to help immerse the reader in the theme.
